Nissan Frontier: In case of emergency - If your vehicle overheats

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / In case of emergency / If your vehicle overheats

WARNING

  • Do not continue driving the Nissan Frontier if the engine is overheating. Continuing to drive in this condition may cause severe engine damage and could increase the risk of a vehicle fire.
  • To avoid serious burns or scalding, never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. If either cap is removed under pressure, hot coolant and steam may spray out forcefully and cause serious injury.
  • Do not open the hood if steam is coming from the engine compartment.

If your Nissan Frontier is overheating, such as when the temperature gauge shows an extremely high reading, or if you notice reduced engine power, abnormal noises, unusual smell, steam, or other signs of cooling system trouble, follow the steps below carefully.

1. Move the Nissan Frontier safely off the road and away from traffic. Apply the parking brake and move the shift lever to P (Park).

Do not stop the engine.

2. Turn off the air conditioner. Open all windows, set the heater or air conditioner temperature control to maximum hot, and set the fan control to high speed. This helps draw heat away from the engine cooling system.

3. Exit the vehicle carefully. Before opening the hood, look and listen for steam or coolant escaping from the radiator or engine compartment. If steam or coolant is visible or audible, turn off the engine immediately.

Do not open the hood any further until steam or coolant is no longer visible.

4. Open the engine hood only after it is safe to do so.

WARNING

If steam, hot coolant, or water is coming from the engine compartment, stand clear to avoid burns or other serious injury.

5. Visually inspect the drive belts for looseness, damage, cracks, or missing sections. Also check whether the engine cooling fan is operating. The radiator hoses and radiator should not be leaking coolant. If coolant is leaking, the water pump belt is missing or loose, or the cooling fan is not running, stop the engine.

WARNING

Keep your hands, hair, jewelry, tools, and clothing away from engine belts and the engine cooling fan. The cooling fan in the Nissan Frontier can start automatically at any time, even when you are not expecting it.

6. After the engine has cooled down, check the coolant level in the engine coolant reservoir tank while the engine is running. If necessary, add the correct coolant to the reservoir tank. Do not add coolant until it is safe to do so and the system has cooled enough to prevent burns.

Have the Nissan Frontier inspected and repaired as soon as possible. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

Ignoring an overheating condition can lead to expensive engine damage, reduced reliability, and unsafe driving conditions. Always treat high temperature warnings seriously and stop the Nissan Frontier in a safe location before continuing your trip.
