Nissan Frontier: Starting and driving - Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) system

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Starting and driving / Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) system

  • The Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS) system in the Nissan Frontier uses automatic brake intervention to improve traction when one drive wheel begins to lose grip. By applying braking force to the slipping wheel, the system helps transfer engine torque to the wheel on the same axle that has better traction, improving vehicle mobility and stability on challenging surfaces.
  • On Nissan Frontier 4-Wheel Drive models, the ABLS system operates in both 4H and 4LO drive modes.

When 4WD is engaged, the ABLS system can assist both drive axles, helping the vehicle maintain traction in off-road, muddy, snowy, sandy, or uneven terrain conditions. On 2-Wheel Drive Nissan Frontier models, the system operates only on the driven axle.

  • The ABLS system remains active at all times and requires no driver input. Under certain operating conditions, the system may temporarily deactivate itself to protect related components. If this occurs, normal braking capability will remain available. The ABLS system can continue functioning even when the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system has been switched off.
  • The ABLS system is designed to assist when one wheel on a drive axle is slipping. If both wheels on the same axle lose traction simultaneously, the system cannot redistribute torque and its effectiveness may be reduced.

WARNING

  • The Nissan Frontier ABLS system is intended to improve traction and vehicle control, but it cannot eliminate the risks associated with abrupt steering inputs, excessive speed, careless driving, or dangerous road conditions. Always reduce speed when driving on slippery surfaces and exercise extra caution when cornering, accelerating, or braking. Safe driving practices remain the driver's responsibility.
  • Do not modify the Nissan Frontier suspension system.

If suspension components such as shock absorbers, struts, springs, stabilizer bars, bushings, control arms, or wheels are not NISSAN-approved, are improperly installed, or have become severely worn, the ABLS system may not function as intended.

This may negatively affect vehicle handling characteristics, traction performance, and overall driving stability. In such situations, the slip indicator light may illuminate to alert the driver.

  • If brake-related components such as brake pads, brake rotors, calipers, hydraulic parts, or other braking system components are not NISSAN-recommended or have deteriorated excessively, the ABLS system may not operate correctly. Under these conditions, the slip indicator light may illuminate and system performance may be reduced.
  • If wheels, tires, or tire sizes other than those specified and recommended by NISSAN are installed on the Nissan Frontier, the ABLS system may not function properly. Differences in tire diameter, tread design, or overall tire condition can affect system calibration and may cause the slip indicator light to illuminate.

The Nissan Frontier Active Brake Limited Slip system is especially beneficial when driving on loose gravel, wet grass, snow-covered roads, muddy trails, or uneven off-road surfaces where traction can vary significantly between the left and right wheels. By helping distribute available torque more effectively, the system can improve confidence and control in demanding driving environments.
