Basic Information
WARNING
Never allow children to play with seat belts inside the Nissan Frontier. Many seating positions are equipped with seat belts that feature an Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) mode. If a seat belt becomes wrapped around a child's neck while the ALR function is activated, the belt may tighten as it retracts, creating a potentially life-threatening situation. This can happen even when the Nissan Frontier is parked and not moving. Immediately unbuckle the seat belt to free the child. If the buckle cannot be released, or if the belt has already become locked, use an appropriate cutting tool such as scissors or a knife to cut the belt and free the child without delay.
Children need adults to help protect them. They need to be properly restrained.
In addition to the information provided in this Nissan Frontier owner's manual, valuable child safety guidance can be obtained from pediatricians, teachers, traffic safety agencies, and community safety organizations.
Every child grows differently and has unique transportation needs. For this reason, it is important to understand the safest and most appropriate way to transport your child at every stage of development.
There are three primary categories of child restraint systems:
The correct restraint system depends on the child's age, height, and weight. In general, infants younger than approximately one year of age and weighing less than 20 lbs. (9 kg) should travel in a rear-facing child restraint. Once children outgrow the rear-facing restraint and are at least one year old, they may transition to an appropriate forward-facing child restraint. Booster seats are designed for older children who have outgrown a forward-facing child restraint but are still too small for the vehicle's seat belt system to fit correctly.
WARNING
Infants and children require specialized protection.
The seat belts in a vehicle may not fit a child properly. The shoulder belt can ride too close to the child's face or neck, increasing the risk of injury.
The lap belt may also fail to sit correctly across the strong hip bones and may instead rest on the abdomen. During a collision or sudden stop, an improperly fitted seat belt can cause severe or even fatal injuries. Always use a child restraint system that is suitable for the child's size and age.
All U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and territories require approved child restraint systems for infants and young children. Compliance with these laws is essential for both safety and legal requirements.
A child restraint can be installed in the Nissan Frontier using either the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system or the vehicle's seat belt system, depending on the restraint design and seating position.
NISSAN recommends that all pre-teens and children ride in the rear seat whenever possible (Crew Cab models). Research consistently shows that children are generally safer when properly restrained in the rear seat rather than the front passenger seat.
This recommendation is especially important because the Nissan Frontier is equipped with a supplemental restraint system (air bag system) for the front passenger seating position.
Infants
Infants should remain in a rear-facing child restraint for at least their first year of life and often longer, depending on the height and weight limits specified by the child restraint manufacturer.
NISSAN recommends selecting a child restraint that meets all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Choose a restraint that is compatible with your Nissan Frontier and carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding installation, adjustment, and daily use to ensure maximum protection.
Small children
Children older than one year and weighing at least 20 lbs. (9 kg) should remain in a rear-facing child restraint for as long as possible until they reach the maximum height or weight permitted by the restraint manufacturer. Rear-facing restraints provide excellent support for the head, neck, and spine during a collision.
Once a child exceeds the rear-facing restraint limits and is at least one year old, a forward-facing child restraint with an integrated harness should be used. Always consult the manufacturer's instructions for specific height and weight requirements.
NISSAN recommends using child restraints that comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. When selecting a restraint for your Nissan Frontier, ensure that it fits properly within the vehicle and is installed exactly as directed by the manufacturer.
Larger children
Children should continue using a forward-facing child restraint with a harness until they reach the maximum height or weight limitations established by the restraint manufacturer.
After outgrowing a forward-facing child restraint, NISSAN recommends transitioning the child to a quality booster seat. The purpose of the booster seat is to position the vehicle's lap and shoulder belts correctly across the child's body. A properly fitted shoulder belt should cross the center of the chest and shoulder without touching the neck or face. The lap belt should rest low across the hips or upper thighs rather than the abdomen.
A booster seat may only be used in seating positions equipped with a three-point seat belt. The booster seat should fit securely on the vehicle seat and display certification indicating compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Once the child grows enough that the shoulder belt naturally rests across the chest and shoulder and the lap belt fits snugly across the lower hips or upper thighs, the booster seat may no longer be necessary. At that point, the vehicle seat belt can be used alone.
A booster seat should continue to be used until the child can successfully pass the following seat belt fit evaluation:
If the answer to any of these questions is no, the child should continue using a booster seat together with a properly fitted three-point seat belt. Maintaining proper seating position throughout every journey is essential for safety in the Nissan Frontier.
NOTE:
Child restraint laws and recommendations may vary by state, province, territory, or local jurisdiction. Before traveling, verify that your child is using the correct restraint system according to current regulations and safety guidelines.
WARNING
Never allow a child to stand, kneel, or move freely on any vehicle seat while the Nissan Frontier is in operation. Children should also never ride in the cargo area. During a sudden stop, sharp maneuver, or collision, a child in these positions could suffer severe injuries or death. Always ensure every child is properly restrained before the vehicle begins moving.
