Nissan Frontier: Appearance and care - Cleaning exterior

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Appearance and care / Cleaning exterior

Basic information

To preserve the clean, attractive appearance of your Nissan Frontier, regular exterior care is essential. Proper washing, drying, waxing, and surface protection help maintain the paint finish, reduce corrosion risks, and keep the vehicle looking well cared for over time.

To protect painted surfaces, wash your Nissan Frontier as soon as possible in the following situations:

  • After rainfall, especially where acid rain may damage the paint finish.
  • After driving near coastal areas where salt air and road moisture can affect exterior surfaces.
  • When contaminants such as soot, bird droppings, tree sap, metal particles, road tar, or insects collect on the paint.
  • When dust, mud, road grime, or dirt buildup becomes visible on the body surface.

Whenever possible, park or store the Nissan Frontier inside a garage or under a covered area to reduce exposure to sunlight, rain, snow, and airborne contaminants.

If outdoor parking is necessary, choose a shaded location whenever available, or protect the vehicle with a properly fitted body cover.

Use care when installing or removing a body cover so the paint surface is not scratched, rubbed, or damaged.

Washing

Remove dirt with a wet sponge and plenty of clean water. Wash the Nissan Frontier thoroughly using mild soap, dedicated automotive wash soap, or a general-purpose dishwashing liquid mixed with clean, lukewarm water. Never use hot water on the exterior finish.

CAUTION

  • Do not direct a concentrated water spray at the sonar sensors, if equipped, on the bumper because this may damage the sensors.

Do not use pressure washers capable of spraying water above 1,200 psi (8,274 kPa) when washing your Nissan Frontier. High-pressure spray above this level may damage or remove paint, decals, or graphics. Keep the washer nozzle at least 12 inches (30 cm) away from the vehicle, use only a wide-angle nozzle, keep the spray moving, and never concentrate water pressure on one area for an extended time.

  • Do not use car washes that contain acid-based detergents. Some car washes, especially certain brushless systems, use acidic cleaning agents. Acid may react with plastic exterior parts, causing them to crack, discolor, or lose proper function. Always confirm with the car wash operator that acid-based products are not being used.
  • Do not wash the vehicle with strong household soap, harsh chemical detergents, gasoline, solvents, or other aggressive cleaners.
  • Do not wash the Nissan Frontier in direct sunlight or while the body panels are hot, because water spots may form on the surface.
  • Avoid rough cloths, tight-napped materials, or harsh washing mitts. When removing dried mud, caked-on dirt, insects, or other foreign materials, work carefully so the paint is not scratched or damaged.

Rinse the vehicle completely with plenty of clean water to remove all soap, dirt, and loosened contaminants.

The inner edges, seams, folds, lower door areas, hatches, and hood edges are especially vulnerable to road salt and trapped moisture. These areas should be cleaned regularly, particularly after winter driving.

Make sure the drain holes along the lower edge of the doors remain open. Spray water under the body and inside the wheel wells to loosen dirt, remove road salt, and help reduce corrosion risk on the Nissan Frontier.

A damp chamois or soft drying towel can be used after washing to reduce water spots and leave the exterior finish cleaner.

Waxing

Regular waxing helps protect the Nissan Frontier paint surface from weather, sunlight, road film, and environmental contaminants while also helping the vehicle maintain a newer appearance.

Before applying a fresh coat of wax, polishing may be recommended to remove old wax residue, dullness, and light weathering from the paint surface.

A NISSAN dealer can help you choose an appropriate wax, polish, or exterior care product for your vehicle finish.

  • Wax your Nissan Frontier only after it has been thoroughly washed and dried. Always follow the instructions supplied with the wax product.
  • Do not use waxes that contain abrasives, cutting compounds, harsh cleaners, or ingredients that may damage the exterior finish.

Machine compounding or aggressive polishing on a base coat/clear coat paint finish may dull the surface, reduce gloss, or leave swirl marks.

Removing spots

Remove tar, oil spots, industrial dust, insect residue, bird droppings, and tree sap from the Nissan Frontier paint surface as quickly as possible. Leaving these materials on the paint may cause staining, etching, or lasting finish damage. Special cleaning products are available from a NISSAN dealer or from automotive accessory stores. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for suitable product recommendations.

Underbody

In regions where road salt is used during winter, the underbody of the Nissan Frontier should be cleaned regularly. Salt and dirt buildup can accelerate corrosion on the underbody, frame components, suspension parts, and other exposed areas.

Before winter begins and again in spring, inspect the underbody protection. If the underseal is damaged, worn, or missing in areas, it should be repaired or re-treated as necessary.

Glass

Use a quality glass cleaner to remove dust, smoke film, road residue, and haze from the glass surfaces. It is normal for glass to develop a thin film after the Nissan Frontier has been parked in strong sunlight or hot weather.

Glass cleaner and a soft cloth will usually remove this film easily and restore clear visibility.

CAUTION

When cleaning the inside of the windows, do not use sharp-edged tools, abrasive cleaners, or chlorine-based disinfectant cleaners. These products or tools may damage electrical conductors, radio antenna elements, or rear window defroster elements.

Aluminum alloy wheels

Wash aluminum alloy wheels regularly with a sponge dampened in a mild soap solution. This is especially important during winter in areas where road salt is used. If salt and road chemicals remain on the wheels, they may cause discoloration, staining, or finish damage.

CAUTION

Follow the directions below to help avoid staining or discoloring the wheels:

  • Do not use wheel cleaners that contain strong acid or strong alkaline ingredients.
  • Do not apply wheel cleaner while the wheels are hot. The wheel temperature should be close to the surrounding air temperature before cleaning.
  • Rinse the wheels thoroughly and remove all cleaner within 15 minutes after application.

Chrome parts

Clean all chrome parts on the Nissan Frontier regularly with a non-abrasive chrome polish to help maintain brightness, reduce staining, and protect the finish.

CAUTION

Follow the directions below to help avoid staining or discoloring chrome parts:

  • Do not use cleaners containing strong acid or strong alkaline ingredients on chrome parts.

Tire dressings

NISSAN does not recommend the use of tire dressings. Tire manufacturers apply a protective coating to tires to help reduce rubber discoloration. If tire dressing is applied, it may react with this coating and form a compound that can come off while driving and stain the Nissan Frontier paint surface.

If you choose to use a tire dressing, follow these precautions:

  • Use a water-based tire dressing. Water-based products are less likely to aggressively dissolve the tire coating than oil-based products.
  • Apply only a light coat of tire dressing to help prevent it from entering the tire tread or grooves, where it can be difficult to remove.
  • Wipe away excess tire dressing with a dry towel. Make sure the dressing is completely removed from the tire tread and grooves.
  • Allow the tire dressing to dry fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions before driving the Nissan Frontier.

Consistent exterior care helps preserve the appearance, paint quality, wheel finish, chrome trim, and long-term value of the Nissan Frontier, especially when the vehicle is frequently exposed to sun, salt, mud, insects, or harsh weather.
