Nissan Frontier: Appearance and care - Corrosion protection

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Appearance and care / Corrosion protection

Most common factors contributing to vehicle corrosion

Corrosion can develop when moisture, dirt, salt, and damaged protective coatings remain on the Nissan Frontier for extended periods. Regular cleaning and early repair of surface damage are important steps in protecting the body, frame areas, and underbody components.

Most vehicle corrosion is caused by:

  • The buildup of moisture-holding dirt, mud, road debris, and contaminants inside body panel sections, cavities, seams, underbody areas, and other hidden spaces.
  • Damage to paint, undercoating, and other protective finishes caused by gravel, stone chips, road debris, scratches, or minor traffic collisions.

Environmental factors influence the rate of corrosion

Moisture

Accumulated sand, dirt, mud, and water on the underside of the Nissan Frontier can speed up corrosion. Wet floor coverings inside the cabin may not dry completely on their own and should be removed and dried properly to help prevent floor panel corrosion.

Relative humidity

Corrosion develops faster in areas with high relative humidity, especially where temperatures remain above freezing, atmospheric pollution is present, and road salt is commonly used during winter driving.

Temperature

High temperatures can accelerate corrosion on parts of the Nissan Frontier that are poorly ventilated or where moisture and contaminants remain trapped.

Air pollution

Industrial pollution, salt in the air near coastal regions, and heavy use of road salt all increase the rate of corrosion.

Road salt also speeds up deterioration of paint surfaces and may reduce the effectiveness of protective coatings if it is not washed away regularly.

Protect your vehicle from corrosion

  • Wash and wax your Nissan Frontier regularly to keep exterior surfaces clean and protected.
  • Inspect the paint often for chips, scratches, and small damaged areas, and repair them as soon as possible.
  • Keep the drain holes at the bottom of the doors open so water does not collect inside the panels.
  • Check the underbody for sand, dirt, mud, or salt buildup. If contamination is present, rinse it away with clean water as soon as possible.

CAUTION

  • NEVER remove dirt, sand, mud, or debris from the passenger compartment by washing it out with a hose.

Use a vacuum cleaner, soft brush, or broom to remove loose dirt from the Nissan Frontier interior.

  • Never allow water or other liquids to contact electronic components inside the vehicle. Moisture may damage switches, modules, wiring, connectors, and other electrical parts.

Chemicals used for road de-icing are highly corrosive. These substances can accelerate rust and deterioration of Nissan Frontier underbody components, including the exhaust system, fuel lines, brake lines, brake cables, floor pan, fenders, suspension areas, and exposed metal surfaces.

During winter, the underbody must be cleaned periodically to remove road salt, de-icing chemicals, and packed dirt.

For additional rust and corrosion protection, especially in regions with heavy road salt, coastal air, high humidity, or severe winter conditions, it is recommended that you consult a NISSAN dealer for proper protective treatment options.

Consistent corrosion prevention helps preserve the structural integrity, appearance, reliability, and long-term value of the Nissan Frontier, particularly when the vehicle is used in harsh climates or off-road environments.
