Nissan Frontier: Technical and consumer information - Event Data Recorders (EDR)

This Nissan Frontier is equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR). The primary purpose of the EDR is to record specific vehicle data in certain crash or near-crash situations, such as air bag deployment or impact with a road obstacle. This information can help explain how the vehicle systems performed immediately before, during, and after the event. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.

The EDR in this Nissan Frontier is designed to record information such as:

  • How different vehicle systems were operating at the time of the event;
  • Whether the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled or fastened;
  • How far, if at all, the driver was pressing the accelerator pedal and/or brake pedal; and,
  • How fast the vehicle was traveling.
  • Sounds are not recorded.

This data can help provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding crashes and injuries. NOTE: EDR data is recorded by the Nissan Frontier only when a non-trivial crash or near-crash situation occurs. No EDR data is recorded during normal driving conditions, and no personal information, such as name, gender, age, or crash location, is recorded by the EDR. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, may combine EDR data with personally identifying information that is routinely collected during a crash investigation.

Special equipment is required to read data recorded by an EDR, and access to the vehicle or the EDR is necessary. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and a NISSAN dealer, other parties, including law enforcement agencies with the proper equipment, may be able to read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

EDR data will only be accessed with the consent of the vehicle owner or lessee, or as otherwise required or permitted by law.
