Nissan Frontier: Maintenance and schedules - Explanation of scheduled maintenance items

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Maintenance and schedules / Explanation of scheduled maintenance items

Basic information

The following explanations are provided to help Nissan Frontier owners better understand the scheduled maintenance items that should be inspected, serviced, or replaced at regular intervals. The maintenance schedule identifies the mileage and time intervals at which each item requires attention.

In addition to scheduled maintenance, the Nissan Frontier also requires certain items to be checked during normal day-to-day operation to help maintain safety, reliability, and performance.

Items marked with "*" are recommended by NISSAN to support reliable vehicle operation.

You are not required to perform maintenance on these marked items solely to maintain the warranties that come with your NISSAN. Other maintenance items and intervals, however, may be required as part of proper service care.

When additional service details are needed, refer to the "Do-it-yourself" section of this manual where applicable.

NOTE:

NISSAN does not recommend the use of non-OEM approved aftermarket flushing systems and strongly advises against performing these services on a NISSAN product. Many aftermarket flushing systems use chemicals or solvents that are not approved by the original equipment manufacturer, and their use has not been validated by NISSAN.

Emission control system maintenance

Air cleaner filter: Replace the air cleaner filter at the specified intervals to help maintain proper engine airflow and efficient Nissan Frontier engine operation.

When the vehicle is driven for long periods in dusty or sandy conditions, inspect and/or replace the filter more frequently.

Engine coolant*: Replace the engine coolant at the specified interval. When adding or replacing coolant, use only Genuine NISSAN Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) or an equivalent coolant with the correct mixture.

Engine drive belts*: Inspect the engine drive belts for wear, fraying, cracking, glazing, looseness, and proper tension. Replace any damaged drive belts promptly to help prevent breakdowns.

NOTE: Mixing any other type of coolant or using non-distilled water may reduce the recommended coolant service interval and may affect long-term Nissan Frontier cooling system protection.

Engine oil and oil filter: Replace the engine oil and oil filter at the specified intervals to maintain proper lubrication, reduce internal wear, and support long engine life.

Engine valve clearance*: Inspect only if valve noise increases. Adjust the valve clearance if necessary.

Fuel filter: Periodic maintenance is not required.

(in-tank type filter)

Fuel lines/connections*: Inspect the fuel hoses, piping, and connections for leaks, looseness, cracking, corrosion, or deterioration. Tighten connections or replace parts when necessary.

Fuel tank vapor vent system*: Inspect vapor lines for leaks, looseness, cracks, or deterioration. Tighten connections or replace parts as required.

Spark plugs: Replace spark plugs at the specified intervals.

Install new spark plugs of the same type as originally equipped to maintain proper Nissan Frontier engine performance and emissions control.

Chassis and body maintenance

Brake lines and cables: Visually inspect for proper routing and installation. Check for chafing, cracks, corrosion, deterioration, and signs of fluid leakage.

Replace any damaged or deteriorated parts immediately.

Brake pads and rotors: Inspect for wear, deterioration, scoring, uneven surfaces, and brake fluid leaks. Replace any worn, damaged, or deteriorated parts immediately.

Exhaust system: Visually inspect the exhaust pipes, muffler, and hangers for leaks, cracks, corrosion, deterioration, and damage. Tighten loose connections or replace components as necessary.

In-cabin microfilter: Replace the cabin filter at the specified intervals. When the Nissan Frontier is driven for long periods in dusty areas, replace the filter more frequently to maintain airflow and cabin comfort.

Propeller shaft(s): Check for damage, looseness, abnormal play, and grease leakage.

Steering gear and linkage, axle and suspension parts, drive shaft boots: Inspect for damage, looseness, torn boots, worn components, and leakage of oil or grease. Under severe driving conditions, these parts should be inspected more often.

Tire rotation: Rotate the tires at the specified interval shown in the maintenance schedule.

During tire rotation, inspect each tire for damage, uneven wear, abnormal tread patterns, and correct inflation. Replace tires if necessary.

Transfer case oil (4WD models), transmission fluid/oil and differential gear oil: Visually inspect for signs of leakage at the specified intervals.

Off-road maintenance: Inspect the following items frequently whenever the Nissan Frontier is driven off-road through deep sand, mud, water, rocks, or other severe terrain:

  • Brake pads and rotors
  • Brake linings and drums
  • Brake lines and hoses
  • Transfer case oil (4WD models), differential and transmission
  • Steering linkage
  • Propeller shaft(s) and front drive shafts
  • Air cleaner filter
  • Clutch housing drain (4WD only)

Following the correct maintenance schedule helps keep the Nissan Frontier dependable, efficient, and ready for demanding use, especially when the vehicle is operated in dusty, muddy, towing, or off-road conditions.
