Always stop the Nissan Frontier engine before refueling, and never smoke or allow sparks, open flames, or ignition sources near the vehicle during the refueling process.

CAUTION
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate.
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to come on.
If the
light illuminates because the fuel-filler cap is loose or missing, install or tighten the cap and
continue driving the Nissan Frontier normally. The
light should turn off after several driving trips. If the
light remains illuminated, have the vehicle inspected. It is recommended that you visit an
authorized NISSAN dealer for diagnosis and service.
To remove the fuel-filler cap:
1. Turn the fuel-filler cap counterclockwise until it can be removed from the filler neck.
2. During refueling, loop the tether strap around the retaining hook 1 to keep the cap secure and prevent contamination.
To install the fuel-filler cap:
1. Insert the fuel-filler cap straight into the fuel-filler tube.
2. Turn the fuel-filler cap clockwise until a single click is heard, confirming proper installation.
Correct installation of the fuel cap helps maintain proper fuel-system pressure and ensures accurate operation of the Nissan Frontier emissions-control system.
Loose Fuel Cap warning
The Loose Fuel Cap warning message appears in the Nissan Frontier vehicle information display whenever the fuel-filler cap is not properly tightened following a refueling event. In some cases, several driving cycles may be required before the message appears.
To clear the warning message, perform the following procedure:
1. Remove and reinstall the fuel-filler cap according to the instructions provided above as soon as possible.
2. Tighten the fuel-filler cap until a single click is heard.
After several normal driving trips, the Nissan Frontier system should automatically clear the warning message if the cap has been installed correctly and no fuel-system faults are present.
