Explanation of general maintenance items
Basic information
WARNING
Failure to follow the procedures listed in this section may result in personal injury.
Additional information about items marked with " * " can be found in the "Do-it-yourself" section of this manual.
Outside the vehicle
The maintenance items listed below should be checked from time to time, unless a specific interval is provided elsewhere in the maintenance schedule.
Doors and engine hood: Check that all doors and the engine hood open, close, and operate smoothly.
Make sure all latches lock securely and release correctly.
Lubricate hinges, latches, latch pins, rollers, and linkages when necessary. Confirm that the secondary hood latch holds the hood securely and prevents it from opening if the primary latch is released.
When the Nissan Frontier is driven in areas where road salt, de-icing chemicals, or other corrosive materials are used, inspect and lubricate these parts more frequently.
Check that the gas stays or struts securely hold the hood, trunk, or rear hatch fully open. If the hood, trunk, or rear hatch does not remain open safely, have the gas stays or struts replaced.
Lights*: Clean the headlights regularly to maintain proper visibility. Make sure the headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signal lights, and all other exterior lights operate correctly and are mounted securely. Also check that the headlight aim is correct.
Road wheel nuts (lug nuts)*: When inspecting the tires, confirm that no wheel nuts are missing and check for looseness. Tighten the wheel nuts if necessary using the proper specification for the Nissan Frontier.
Tire rotation*: Rotate the tires at the specified interval shown in the maintenance schedule to help promote even tread wear and stable handling.
Tires*: Check tire pressure often with an accurate gauge, especially before long-distance trips. If needed, adjust the pressure in all tires, including the spare, to the specified level. Inspect each tire carefully for cuts, cracks, punctures, bulges, uneven wear, or other damage.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) tire pressure sensor: When tires are replaced because of age or wear, it is recommended that the tire pressure sensor assembly also be replaced to maintain reliable TPMS operation.
Wheel alignment and balance: If the Nissan Frontier pulls to one side while driving on a straight, level road, or if uneven or abnormal tire wear is found, wheel alignment may be required. If the steering wheel or seat vibrates at normal highway speeds, wheel balancing may be needed.
For additional tire safety information, refer to "Important Tire Safety Information" (US) or "Tire Safety Information" (Canada) in the Warranty Information Booklet.
Consistent general maintenance helps the Nissan Frontier deliver safer operation, longer tire life, improved reliability, and better overall performance throughout ownership.
Windshield: Clean the Nissan Frontier windshield regularly to maintain clear visibility in all driving conditions. Inspect the windshield at least every six months for cracks, chips, scratches, or any other damage that could reduce visibility or weaken the glass.
Have a damaged windshield repaired by a qualified repair facility as soon as possible. It is recommended that windshield damage be inspected or repaired by a NISSAN dealer or a NISSAN Certified Collision Center.
Windshield wiper blades*: Check the windshield wiper blades for cracks, hardening, splitting, or wear if they do not clean the glass properly or leave streaks while operating.
Inside the vehicle
The maintenance items listed here should be checked regularly, including during scheduled maintenance, when cleaning the Nissan Frontier interior, or whenever a change in vehicle operation is noticed.
Accelerator pedal: Check that the accelerator pedal operates smoothly and returns properly. Make sure the pedal does not catch, stick, or require uneven effort. Keep the floor mat away from the pedal area at all times.
Automatic transmission P (Park) mechanism: On a reasonably steep hill, check that the Nissan Frontier remains securely held with the shift lever in P (Park), without applying the brakes.
Brake pedal: Check the brake pedal for smooth and consistent operation. If the brake pedal suddenly travels farther than normal, feels spongy, or if the vehicle seems to require a longer distance to stop, have the Nissan Frontier inspected immediately.
It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service. Always keep the floor mat clear of the brake pedal.
Brakes: Check that the brakes do not cause the Nissan Frontier to pull to one side when applied.
Parking brake: Check parking brake operation regularly. The vehicle should remain securely held on a fairly steep hill using only the parking brake. If adjustment is needed, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
Seats: Check seat position controls, including seat adjusters, seatback recliners, and related mechanisms, to make sure they operate smoothly and that all latches lock securely in every position.
Check that the head restraints/headrests move up and down smoothly and that the locks, if equipped, hold securely in all latched positions.
Seat belts: Check that all parts of the seat belt system, including buckles, anchors, adjusters, and retractors, operate smoothly and are installed securely.
Inspect the belt webbing for cuts, fraying, wear, stretching, or other visible damage.
Steering wheel: Check for any changes in the steering system, such as excessive free play, hard steering, vibration, looseness, or unusual noises while turning.
Warning lights and chimes: Make sure all warning lights and warning chimes operate properly and respond as expected during vehicle startup and system checks.
Windshield defroster: Check that air flows properly and in sufficient volume from the defroster outlets when using the heater or air conditioner.
Windshield wiper and washer*: Confirm that the wipers and washer system operate correctly, that washer fluid sprays properly, and that the wipers do not chatter, skip, or leave streaks on the glass.
Under the hood and vehicle
Regular interior and visibility-related inspections help keep the Nissan Frontier safe, comfortable, and predictable to operate, especially before long trips or seasonal weather changes.
The maintenance items listed below should be inspected periodically, for example each time you check the engine oil, refill fuel, prepare for a long trip, or notice any change in Nissan Frontier operation.
Battery (for maintenance free batteries)*: This Nissan Frontier is equipped with a sealed maintenance-free battery. If battery inspection, testing, charging, or replacement is required, it is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for service.
NOTE:
Care should be taken to avoid conditions that may lead to battery discharge and possible no-start situations, including:
1. Installing or using electronic accessories for long periods while the engine is not running, such as phone chargers, GPS units, DVD players, dash cameras, or other devices that consume battery power.
2. Driving the Nissan Frontier infrequently or mainly using the vehicle for short trips that do not allow the battery to recharge fully.
In these situations, the battery may need to be charged periodically to help maintain battery health and reliable starting performance.
Brake fluid level*: Make sure the brake fluid level is between the MAX and MIN lines on the reservoir. A low level may indicate brake wear or a possible leak that should be checked promptly.
Engine coolant level*: Check the coolant level only when the engine is cold. Maintaining the correct coolant level helps protect the Nissan Frontier engine from overheating, freezing, and corrosion.
Engine drive belts*: Inspect the engine drive belts for wear, fraying, cracking, glazing, looseness, or other visible damage. Replace any damaged drive belts as soon as possible.
Engine oil level*: Check the oil level after parking the Nissan Frontier on a level surface and turning the engine off. Wait more than 15 minutes so the oil can drain back into the oil pan before checking the dipstick.
Exhaust system: Make sure there are no loose supports, cracks, holes, corrosion, or damaged sections. If the exhaust sound becomes unusual or if you notice the smell of exhaust fumes, have the exhaust system inspected immediately. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.
Fluid leaks: After the vehicle has been parked for a while, check underneath the Nissan Frontier for signs of fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, or other leaks. Water dripping from the air conditioner after use is normal. If leaks are found, or if fuel fumes are noticeable, identify the cause and have it corrected immediately.
Power steering fluid level* and lines: Check the fluid level when the fluid is cold and the engine is off. Inspect the power steering lines for secure attachment, leaks, cracks, deterioration, or other damage.
Radiator and hoses: Check the front of the radiator and remove dirt, insects, leaves, road debris, or other material that may have accumulated and restricted airflow.
Make sure the radiator hoses are not cracked, deformed, swollen, rotted, leaking, or loose at their connections.
Underbody: The underbody of the Nissan Frontier is often exposed to corrosive materials such as road salt, de-icing chemicals, mud, dust-control substances, and moisture. These materials should be removed regularly because they can cause rust on the floor pan, frame, fuel lines, brake lines, and areas around the exhaust system. At the end of winter, thoroughly flush the underbody with plain water, paying special attention to areas where mud, salt, and dirt may collect.
Windshield-washer fluid*: Check that there is enough fluid in the washer reservoir. Keeping the reservoir filled helps maintain clear visibility during rain, snow, dust, road spray, and winter driving.
Regular under-hood and underbody inspections help keep the Nissan Frontier reliable, safer to operate, and better protected against preventable wear, corrosion, and fluid-related problems.
