WARNING

  • Never depend exclusively on the Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system to regulate vehicle speed while traveling down steep slopes. Drivers must remain attentive and prepared to use the brake pedal whenever necessary. Extra caution should be exercised on icy, muddy, gravel-covered, wet, or extremely steep descents. Failure to maintain proper vehicle control could result in loss of control, serious injury, or death.
  • The Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system may not be capable of maintaining the desired vehicle speed under every road surface, load condition, or terrain situation. Always remain ready to apply the brakes manually when necessary. Failure to do so may increase the risk of a collision or serious personal injury.

CAUTION

If the Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system operates continuously for an extended period, brake component temperatures may increase significantly. Under these circumstances, the system may temporarily disable itself and the indicator light may begin flashing. If the indicator light does not return to a steady illumination after flashing, discontinue use of the system until conditions normalize.

The Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system is specifically designed to reduce driver workload during challenging off-road descents.

By automatically applying the brakes when necessary, the system helps maintain a controlled vehicle speed, allowing the driver to focus primarily on steering and selecting the safest path down the slope.

This feature is especially useful when navigating rocky trails, loose gravel roads, steep dirt tracks, and other demanding off-road environments.

To activate the Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system, all of the following operating conditions must be satisfied:

  • The transmission shift lever must be placed in either a forward gear or reverse gear.
  • The 4WD selector switch must be in the 4L position and vehicle speed must remain below approximately 15 mph (25 km/h), or
  • The 4WD selector switch must be in the 4H position and vehicle speed must remain below approximately 21 mph (35 km/h).
  • The Hill Descent Control switch must be turned ON.

When the Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system activates successfully, the Hill Descent Control ON indicator light illuminates in the instrument cluster.

During operation, the system automatically applies braking force as needed to help regulate vehicle speed. As a result, the stop lamps and tail lamps may illuminate while the system is actively controlling descent speed.

If the accelerator pedal or brake pedal is pressed while the Hill Descent Control system is active, system operation is temporarily suspended.

Once the pedal is released and all Nissan Frontier operating requirements continue to be satisfied, Hill Descent Control automatically resumes operation.

If the Hill Descent Control ON indicator light flashes, it generally indicates that one or more activation requirements have not been met or that the system has been temporarily disengaged.

This may occur because of excessive vehicle speed, an incorrect 4WD mode selection, brake temperature protection, or other operating conditions.

To switch off the Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system, press the Hill Descent Control switch again and return it to the OFF position.

The Nissan Frontier Hill Descent Control system is one of several advanced off-road technologies designed to improve driver confidence and vehicle control during challenging terrain situations, helping make steep downhill driving safer and more manageable.
