Nissan Frontier: Do-it-yourself - Maintenance precautions

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Do-it-yourself / Maintenance precautions

When carrying out any inspection, repair, or maintenance work on your Nissan Frontier, always use caution to help prevent accidental injury and avoid damage to the vehicle. The following general safety precautions should be carefully observed before and during any do-it-yourself service work.

WARNING

  • Park the Nissan Frontier on a level surface, apply the parking brake securely, and block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. Move the shift lever to P (Park).
  • Make sure the ignition switch is in the OFF or LOCK position before replacing parts or performing repairs.
  • If it is necessary to work with the engine running, keep your hands, clothing, hair, and tools away from moving fans, belts, pulleys, and all other moving components.
  • Before working on your vehicle, secure or remove loose clothing and remove jewelry such as rings, watches, bracelets, or metal accessories.

This helps reduce the risk of injury or accidental contact with electrical or moving parts.

  • Always wear suitable eye protection whenever you perform maintenance on the Nissan Frontier.
  • If the engine must be operated in an enclosed area such as a garage, make sure there is adequate ventilation so exhaust gases can escape safely.
  • Never get under the vehicle while it is supported only by a jack. If work beneath the Nissan Frontier is required, support the vehicle with approved safety stands.
  • Keep open flames, sparks, cigarettes, and other ignition sources away from the fuel tank and battery.
  • On gasoline engine models, fuel filters or fuel lines should be serviced with extreme care because the fuel system may remain under high pressure even when the engine is off.

It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer for this service.

CAUTION

  • Do not work under the hood while the engine is hot. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool before beginning inspection or service.
  • Avoid direct contact with used engine oil and engine coolant. Improper disposal of engine oil, coolant, and other automotive fluids can harm the environment. Always follow local regulations when disposing of vehicle fluids.
  • Never leave engine-related or transmission-related harness connectors disconnected while the ignition switch is in the ON position.
  • Never connect or disconnect the battery or any transistorized component while the ignition switch is in the ON position.

NOTE:

If the battery is completely discharged, the transmission may not be shifted manually into other positions.

This "Do-it-yourself" section explains only maintenance items that are relatively simple for a Nissan Frontier owner to perform with proper care, basic tools, and attention to safety.

A Genuine NISSAN service manual is also available for more detailed technical procedures and specifications.

NISSAN recommends using Genuine NISSAN parts or equivalent replacement parts. Components that do not meet or exceed NISSAN specifications may damage your Nissan Frontier and may affect warranty coverage. It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer parts department for information about the correct parts for your vehicle.

Incomplete or improper servicing may cause operating problems, excessive emissions, reduced reliability, or warranty concerns. If you are unsure about any inspection or repair, it is recommended that you have the work performed by a NISSAN dealer.

Performing maintenance correctly helps protect the performance, safety, and long-term durability of your Nissan Frontier, especially when the vehicle is used for towing, off-road driving, or severe weather operation.
