WARNING
A Nissan Frontier equipped with Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) should never be tested on a two-wheel dynamometer, such as equipment used by some states for emissions testing, or on similar equipment. Always inform inspection facility personnel that your vehicle is equipped with 4WD before it is placed on a dynamometer. Using incorrect test equipment may cause transmission damage or unexpected vehicle movement, which could result in serious vehicle damage or personal injury.
Due to legal requirements in some states and Canadian provinces, your Nissan Frontier may need to be in a "ready condition" before an Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test of the emission control system can be completed.
The vehicle reaches the "ready condition" after being driven through certain operating patterns. In most cases, normal everyday driving is enough for the Nissan Frontier to complete the necessary system checks.
If a powertrain system component has been repaired or the battery has been disconnected, the vehicle may be reset to a "not ready" condition.
Before taking the vehicle for an I/M test, check the inspection/maintenance readiness condition. Place the ignition switch in the ON position without starting the engine. If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) comes on steadily for 20 seconds and then blinks for 10 seconds, the I/M test condition is "not ready". If the MIL does not blink after 20 seconds, the I/M test condition is "ready". It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer to set the "ready condition" or prepare the Nissan Frontier for inspection testing.
