Nissan Frontier: Starting and driving - Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system

Nissan Frontier 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Starting and driving / Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system

Basic Information

The Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system in the Nissan Frontier uses multiple sensors to monitor steering input, wheel speed, vehicle movement, acceleration, and the driver's intended direction of travel.

Under certain driving conditions, the Nissan Frontier VDC system can help support stability and traction by performing the following functions:

  • It controls brake pressure to help reduce wheel slip at one slipping drive wheel, allowing power to be redirected to the non-slipping drive wheel on the same axle.
  • It adjusts brake pressure and engine output to help reduce drive wheel slip based on vehicle speed, road surface, and traction demand. This function helps improve traction control when accelerating on slippery roads.
  • If the 4WD transfer case is shifted into 4LO, the Nissan Frontier VDC OFF indicator light when 4LO is selected indicator light will illuminate, and the VDC system will be turned off for low-range four-wheel-drive operation.
  • It controls brake pressure at individual wheels and may reduce engine output to help the driver maintain control of the Nissan Frontier in the following conditions:
    • Understeer, when the vehicle tends to continue forward and does not follow the intended steering path despite increased steering input.
    • Oversteer, when the rear of the vehicle tends to rotate or slide due to road surface conditions, speed, or driver input.

The VDC system can help the driver maintain better control of the Nissan Frontier, especially during sudden maneuvers or on slippery surfaces. However, it cannot prevent loss of control in every driving situation, and it cannot overcome unsafe speed, poor tire condition, or careless driving.

When the VDC system operates, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator light flashing during VDC operation indicator light in the instrument panel flashes. When this happens, note the following:

  • The road surface may be slippery, or the system may have detected that corrective action is needed to help keep the vehicle close to the steered path.
  • You may feel a pulsation in the brake pedal and hear noise or vibration from under the hood. This is normal and indicates that the Nissan Frontier VDC system is actively assisting vehicle stability.
  • Adjust your speed, steering, braking, and acceleration to match the road and weather conditions.

If a malfunction occurs in the system, the Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light for system malfunction indicator light will illuminate in the instrument panel. When this indicator light is on, the VDC system automatically turns off and stability assistance may not be available.

The VDC OFF switch is used to manually turn off the VDC system. The Nissan Frontier VDC OFF indicator with RAB and AEB warning lights indicator light, RAB warning light, and the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system warning light illuminate to show that the VDC, RAB, and AEB with Pedestrian Detection systems are switched off.

When the VDC OFF switch is used to turn off the system, the Nissan Frontier VDC system may still apply brake control to prevent one drive wheel from slipping by transferring power to a drive wheel with better traction. The Nissan Frontier slip indicator light flashing during limited traction control indicator light flashes if this occurs. All other VDC functions are turned off, and the Nissan Frontier VDC OFF indicator light not flashing when VDC functions are disabled indicator light will not flash.

The VDC system is automatically reset to ON when the ignition switch is placed in the OFF position and then returned to the ON position.

The system computer has a built-in diagnostic feature that checks operation each time the engine is started and the Nissan Frontier begins moving forward or in reverse at a low speed. During this self-test, you may hear a clunking sound and/or feel a pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and does not indicate a system malfunction.

WARNING

  • The VDC system is designed to help the driver maintain stability, but it cannot prevent accidents caused by sudden steering at high speeds, aggressive driving, careless operation, or dangerous driving techniques. Reduce speed and use extra caution when driving or cornering on slippery surfaces. Always drive the Nissan Frontier responsibly and according to road conditions.
  •  Do not modify the vehicle's suspension.

If suspension components such as shock absorbers, struts, springs, stabilizer bars, bushings, control arms, or wheels are not NISSAN-recommended for the Nissan Frontier, are improperly installed, or are severely worn, the VDC system may not operate correctly. This can negatively affect handling performance, and the Nissan Frontier slip indicator light related to suspension or VDC operation indicator light may flash, or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light related to suspension condition indicator light may illuminate.

  • If brake-related parts such as brake pads, rotors, calipers, or other brake components are not NISSAN-recommended or are extremely deteriorated, the VDC system may not function properly, and both the Nissan Frontier slip indicator light related to brake system condition and Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light related to brake parts indicator lights may illuminate.
  • If engine-control-related parts are not NISSAN-recommended, are incorrectly serviced, or are extremely deteriorated, both the Nissan Frontier slip indicator light related to engine control system and Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light related to engine control parts indicator lights may illuminate.
  • When driving on extremely inclined surfaces, such as high-banked corners or sharply angled roads, the VDC system may not operate as intended, and the Nissan Frontier slip indicator light on steep or banked surfaces indicator light may flash, or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light on highly inclined roads indicator light may illuminate. Avoid driving on these types of roads whenever possible.
  • When driving on an unstable surface such as a turntable, ferry, elevator, moving ramp, or similar platform, the Nissan Frontier slip indicator light on unstable moving surfaces indicator light may flash, or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light on ferry elevator or ramp indicator light may illuminate. This is not a malfunction.

For best performance, keep the Nissan Frontier tires, brakes, suspension, and engine control components in proper condition. Correct maintenance helps the VDC system respond accurately when traction or stability support is needed.

After the Nissan Frontier has been moved away from the unstable area and is positioned on firm, level ground, restart the engine so the Vehicle Dynamic Control system can complete its normal self-check and resume proper operation.

  • If wheels or tires that do not match NISSAN recommendations are installed on the Nissan Frontier, the VDC system may not calculate traction and vehicle movement correctly. As a result, the Nissan Frontier Vehicle Dynamic Control indicator light indicator light may flash, or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator light indicator light may remain illuminated.
  • The VDC system in the Nissan Frontier is an important stability support feature, but it cannot replace proper winter tires or tire chains when driving on snow-covered roads.
  • Brake force distribution

When the Nissan Frontier is braking while moving through a curve, the brake force distribution function helps balance braking pressure among all four wheels. The system adjusts this force according to the turning radius and driving conditions, helping the vehicle remain more composed and predictable during cornering.

    WARNING

    • The Vehicle Dynamic Control system is engineered to assist the driver in maintaining stability in the Nissan Frontier, but it does not prevent every accident. It cannot overcome sudden steering inputs at high speed, careless driving, aggressive maneuvers, or unsafe techniques. Always reduce speed, use extra caution on slippery surfaces, and drive through curves with steady, controlled inputs.
    • Do not modify the vehicle's suspension.

If suspension components such as shock absorbers, struts, springs, stabilizer bars, bushings, or wheels are not NISSAN recommended for the Nissan Frontier, or if those parts are badly worn, damaged, or deteriorated, the VDC system may not operate as intended. This can negatively affect handling, stability, and driver control, and the Nissan Frontier VDC indicator light flashing warning indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier Vehicle Dynamic Control warning light illuminated indicator light may illuminate.

    • If brake-related parts, including brake pads, rotors, or calipers, are not NISSAN recommended for the Nissan Frontier, or if they are severely worn or deteriorated, the VDC system may not function correctly and both the Nissan Frontier brake system warning indicator and Nissan Frontier VDC system warning indicator the indicator lights may illuminate.
    • If engine control-related components are not NISSAN recommended or are excessively worn, damaged, or deteriorated, both the Nissan Frontier engine control warning indicator and Nissan Frontier VDC warning indicator indicator lights may illuminate.
    • When driving on extremely inclined surfaces, including steeply banked corners or unusually angled roads, the VDC system may not operate properly. In these conditions, the Nissan Frontier Vehicle Dynamic Control indicator on inclined road indicator light may flash, or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light on steep banked road indicator light may illuminate. Avoid driving the Nissan Frontier on these types of roads whenever possible.
    • When the Nissan Frontier is driven or positioned on an unstable surface, such as a turntable, ferry deck, elevator platform, service ramp, or another moving or uneven base, the Nissan Frontier VDC indicator light on unstable surface indicator light may flash or the Nissan Frontier Vehicle Dynamic Control warning light on ramp indicator light may illuminate. This condition does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.

After the Nissan Frontier has been driven back onto a stable surface, restart the engine to allow the system to reset and continue normal operation.

    • If wheels or tires other than the NISSAN recommended specifications are used on the Nissan Frontier, the VDC system may not operate correctly. The system depends on accurate wheel speed and traction information, so improper tire size, type, or condition may cause the Nissan Frontier VDC indicator light with non recommended tires indicator light to flash or the Nissan Frontier VDC warning light with incorrect wheels or tires indicator light to illuminate.
    • The VDC system is a driver assistance feature and should never be treated as a replacement for proper winter tires, tire chains, or careful low-speed driving on snow-covered roads. For safe Nissan Frontier winter driving, always use tires and equipment suited to the road surface and weather conditions.
