Basic information Nissan Frontier SUV

Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start system overview

The Nissan Frontier remote engine start button button is included on the NISSAN Intelligent Key when the Nissan Frontier is equipped with the Remote Engine Start feature.

This convenient feature allows the engine to be started remotely from outside the vehicle, helping prepare the cabin before entering.

Depending on vehicle equipment and environmental conditions, the following Nissan Frontier systems may respond automatically when Remote Engine Start is used:

  • Vehicles equipped with manual climate controls will generally resume the most recently selected heating or cooling settings.
  • Vehicles equipped with automatic climate control may automatically select heating or cooling functions based on outside temperature, cabin temperature, and system programming.

The Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start feature can help improve comfort during extremely hot or cold weather by allowing the cabin environment to begin adjusting before occupants enter the vehicle.

Some local, regional, or municipal regulations may limit or prohibit the use of Remote Engine Start systems or restrict the amount of time a parked vehicle may idle.

For example, certain jurisdictions require that the vehicle remain within the driver's line of sight while operating under remote start conditions, while others restrict idling except during severe weather conditions.

Always review and comply with local laws and regulations before using the Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start system.

Additional environmental factors may also affect operation of the Remote Engine Start feature.

Factors such as weather conditions, nearby electronic equipment, radio-frequency interference, battery condition, and surrounding obstacles can influence the performance of the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key transmitter and Remote Engine Start system.

Maintaining a healthy Intelligent Key battery and vehicle battery will help ensure consistent operation and maximum Remote Engine Start performance.

Remote Engine Start operating range Nissan Frontier 2022

WARNING

  • To help reduce the risk of injury, serious harm, or death caused by unintended vehicle operation, accidental window movement, or unexpected door-lock activation, never leave children, individuals requiring assistance, or pets unattended inside a Nissan Frontier. Interior temperatures can rise rapidly, even during mild weather conditions, creating a potentially dangerous environment within a short period of time.
  • Never use the Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start feature in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas such as garages, storage buildings, or other confined spaces. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that is extremely hazardous.

Exposure to carbon monoxide can result in dizziness, unconsciousness, severe injury, or death.

CAUTION

If the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key battery becomes weak or discharged, or if strong radio-frequency interference is present near the vehicle, the operating range of the Intelligent Key may be reduced and Remote Engine Start operation may become unreliable.

The Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start feature can only operate when the registered Intelligent Key is located within the specified communication range of the vehicle.

The maximum operating distance for the Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start system is approximately 197 ft (60 m) under normal conditions.

Actual operating distance may vary depending on weather conditions, nearby electronic equipment, surrounding structures, and sources of radio-frequency interference.

Remote starting the vehicle

To activate the Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start feature, perform the following steps:

1. Point the Intelligent Key toward the vehicle.

2. Press the Nissan Frontier Intelligent Key lock button button to lock all doors.

3. Within 5 seconds, press and hold the Nissan Frontier remote engine start button button until the turn-signal indicators flash and the tail lamps illuminate.

If the Nissan Frontier is not within your direct line of sight, press and hold the Nissan Frontier remote engine start activation icon button for at least 2 seconds.

The following actions will occur after the Nissan Frontier engine starts remotely:

  • The parking lamps will illuminate and remain on while the engine is running.
  • The doors will stay locked and the climate-control system may activate automatically.
  • The engine will continue running for up to 10 minutes.

To extend operation, repeat the Remote Engine Start procedure once for an additional 10-minute period.

Before driving the Nissan Frontier, press and hold the brake pedal while placing the ignition system in the ON position.

This step transfers vehicle control from Remote Engine Start mode to normal driving operation.

Extending engine run time

The Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start function may be extended one time by repeating the remote-start procedure described above.

Engine run time is calculated as follows:

  • The initial 10-minute operating period begins when Remote Engine Start is activated.
  • The second operating period begins immediately when Remote Engine Start is activated a second time. For example, if the engine has already been running for 5 minutes and another remote start cycle is initiated, the Nissan Frontier engine will continue operating for a total of 15 minutes.
  • Extending the operating period counts as the second and final Remote Engine Start cycle permitted before the ignition system must be restarted normally.

A maximum of two Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Starts, or one Remote Engine Start plus one extension cycle, are permitted between ignition cycles.

Before the Remote Engine Start feature can be used again, the ignition switch must be placed in the ON position and then returned to the OFF position.

Canceling a Remote Engine Start

To stop a Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start session before the timer expires, perform any of the following actions:

  • Aim the Intelligent Key toward the vehicle and press Nissan Frontier remote engine stop command icon until the parking lights turn off.
  • Activate the hazard warning flashers.
  • Cycle the ignition switch ON and then OFF.
  • Allow the extended run-time period to expire.
  • Allow the initial 10-minute timer to expire.
  • Open the engine hood.
  • Shift the Nissan Frontier out of the P (Park) position.
  • Trigger the vehicle alarm through unauthorized entry detection.
  • Press the ignition switch without a registered Intelligent Key present inside the vehicle.
  • Press the ignition switch with an Intelligent Key inside the vehicle but without depressing the brake pedal.

Conditions the Remote Engine Start will notwork

The Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start feature will not operate under any of the following conditions:

  • The ignition switch is already in the ON position.
  • The hood is not completely closed and latched.
  • The hazard warning lights are activated.
  • The engine is currently running. The engine must be fully shut down. If the engine has just been turned off, wait at least 6 seconds before attempting another Remote Engine Start. This requirement does not apply when extending engine run time.
  • The Nissan Frontier remote engine start command button button is not pressed and held for at least 2 seconds.
  • The Nissan Frontier lock and remote start sequence button button is not pressed and held within 5 seconds after pressing the lock button.
  • The brake pedal is depressed.
  • The vehicle doors are not fully closed and locked.
  • The Key System Error warning remains illuminated in the Nissan Frontier vehicle information display.
  • The vehicle alarm has been activated due to unauthorized entry.
  • Two Remote Engine Start cycles, or one Remote Engine Start plus one extension cycle, have already been completed.
  • The Nissan Frontier transmission is not in the P (Park) position.
  • A registered Intelligent Key is detected inside the vehicle.

The Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start Mode (if so equipped) may display status messages, indicators, or warning notifications in the vehicle information display to inform the driver about current operating conditions or system restrictions.

Understanding these requirements and limitations helps ensure safe, reliable, and effective operation of the Nissan Frontier Remote Engine Start system in a wide range of driving and weather conditions.
