Disassembly

NOTE:

For component identification and locations, refer to Seat — Exploded View, Front in this section.

  1. Remove the seat backrest. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest — Front in this section.
  1. Remove the backrest cover. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest Cover — Front in this section.
  1. Remove the backrest foam pad.
  1. If equipped, remove the backrest latch release lever cover.
  1. Detach the side air bag wire harness pin-type retainers and route out the wire harness from the backrest frame.
    • Note the retainer locations and wire harness routing for correct installation.
  1. Remove the 2 nuts and side air bag module.
    • Note the locator pin position for correct installation.
  1. Use a suitable tool to remove the to 2 metal upper retainers clamped to the backrest support and backrest frame wires.
  1. Detach the 2 lower retainers from the backrest frame and remove the backrest support.

Assembly

  1. NOTICE: Inspect the backrest support and retainers for damage. If any damaged, loose or detached retainers are found, new retainers must be installed. Failure to follow this instruction may result in backrest support failure.

    Position the backrest support in front of the backrest frame and install the retainers from the front side.

    • Install the 2 lower retainers to the backrest frame.
    • Use a suitable tool to crimp and tighten the 2 metal upper retainers over the backrest support and backrest frame wire.
  1. WARNING: Before
    installing the seat side air bag module/deployment chute assembly:

    • Inspect the side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material.
    • Remove any foreign material from the mounting surfaces of the deployment chute, the seat backrest frame mounting bracket and the air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad.
    • Install new parts if damaged.
    Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

    WARNING: If
    the seat side air bag cover has been damaged or separated from its mounting, or if the air bag material has been exposed, install a new seat side air bag module. Never try to repair the seat side air bag module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

    Install the side air bag to the backrest frame with the locator pin correctly positioned and install the 2 side air bag nuts.
    • Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  1. Install the wire harness to the backrest frame as noted in disassembly and attach the pin-type retainers.
  1. If equipped, install the backrest latch release lever cover.
  1. WARNING: Make
    sure the backrest foam pad is correctly installed over the backrest frame and that the seat side air bag module is centered in the opening of the backrest foam pad. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

    Install the backrest foam pad.

  1. Install the backrest cover. For additional information, refer to Seat Backrest Cover — Front in this section.
